Exercise as medicine — powerful treatment for today’s children.
We all agree that exercise is good for health. Yet we know surprisingly little about why or how it can be prescribed to optimize well-being and prevent disease. What type of exercise is most effective for someone with asthma, a disability, injury, or a serious illness? How much exercise is appropriate, and how often? Similarly, sleep is fundamental to health across all age groups, impacting almost every aspect of physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being. Exercise and sleep are closely linked, with each profoundly influencing the other, yet the mechanisms behind this interaction remain largely unexplored.
At the UCI Health Research Center for Exercise Medicine and Sleep, researchers are leading pediatric exercise and sleep research. They are utilizing cutting-edge research platforms to investigate how exercise and sleep contribute to health at the most fundamental level — the processes happening within the human body.
